Who Will Be Assimilated? - 06/05/2006 9:49 PM
A culture war is brewing here in the good ole USA. The situation is that illegal Mexican immigration into the USA has resulted in millions of foreigners enjoying the benefits of what our country has to offer without paying for admission. The second largest line-item for Mexico’s GNP is money sent home from Mexicans working/living in the USA (first is tourism and third is oil). America is a wealthy country and Mexico is not only very poor but hopelessly corrupt. It is understandable why Mexican’s would want to migrate to the USA.

Current immigration policy should be reviewed. There are too many stories about hard-working legal foreigners in the USA who are frustrated by the many years required to become a citizen. We should review our immigration policy and find where we can fix the flaws, look for ways to improve and speed-up the process of becoming a legal US citizen.

But the culture war isn’t really about the millions of jobs held by the illegal’s, and the taxes they are or are not paying. It focuses around several key issues:

The Mexicans here (legal or not) need to assimilate into our culture. This includes learning and using English as their primary language and respecting American cultural norms. This in no way means they cannot also respect their cultural heritage and customs. America has been called the great melting pot but it really is more of a tossed salad (I forget who said it perhaps Dr. Laura). We are not a culture of one bland flavor; we’re a mix of complimentary flavors.

The Mexicans here illegally need to understand that we are a nation of laws (perhaps unlike the corrupt nation they left) and that the average American does not recognize “their rights” and is unsympathetic to an “in your face” attitude. If you’re here illegally, then do what you can to influence the immigration policies of this country. Know Americans will stand beside you and push for change if you assimilate into our culture.

Good, bad or indifferent, the current immigration policy has allowed millions of people to legally enter this country and become citizens. Most of these have embraced American culture and have, as a result, thrived. America is not a guarantee, it is an opportunity – an opportunity fought and paid for through American blood, sweat and tears. If you are disrespecting our current laws, expect to be disrespected by those who live under the flag that established them.

America, while wealthy, cannot simply absorb the Mexican population without the Mexican resources. We have no desire to absorb a Mexican population who is not interested in assimilation to our way of life. I would not illegally move to Saudi Arabia and march the streets with outrage that I can’t buy pornography from a local grocery store. I won’t cruise their streets with blasting rock music and fly an American flag at my house. Imagine the reception I’d receive…

America needs to build a very solid wall across our southern border (with build-in electronic surveillance). (Perhaps we need one on our northern border as well.) We need to establish English as the official language of the USA and end all multi-lingual requirements (let any multi-lingual initiatives be local decisions). We need to review our immigration policy and assure that hard-working, healthy and law-abiding people have a speedy pathway to citizenship. Any illegal immigrants in this country today need to leave and legally enter this country (hopefully through a new immigration policy). We need to enforce existing laws to crackdown on illegal immigration (with a strong focus on those who hire illegal immigrants and transport them across the border).

We need to put an end to the cry of racism every time an American has the courage to say something like I have said here. America had better wake-up and recognize and respect our unique culture, or one day it will be gone – and with it much of what has made America great. It is worth noting that illegal American immigration into Mexico, not being a problem, might lend some insight into which country has a better handle on human rights
