Where are the peace-loving Moslems? - 04/13/2004 8:25 PM
While I would agree that it is most likely true that most Moslems are not radical Islamists who support terrorism and hate the United States, it is hard to believe it sometimes. Part of the reason it is hard to believe is how quiet the rest of the Moslems are. Look at the people recently taken hostage, murdered and their bodies hung from a bridge. Most of the world was shocked by the event, most people spoke of their outrage. About the only thing anybody heard from the rest of the Moslems was silence. Where are the majority of good Moslems protesting this travesty against humanity? Often when you do hear some Moslem speak negatively about some radical Moslem action it is tempered with a degree of understanding. Is it required that Moslems speak out loudly against such terrible acts? No. Does the silence of these “good” Moslems convict them as sympathetic to terrorists? No. Is it legitimate that the average non-Moslem holds all Moslems somewhat suspect because of their silence? Yes, I think so. For example, if I was pro-life and a pro-life person murdered a doctor who performed abortions, I would yell the loudest to hang the murder…I would not want my “good” view to be tainted by someone who held my views among their views.
Moslems are not doing themselves any favors by behaving like victims and by maintaining a low profile during times like these. It is exactly the wrong approach. They do not need to apologize for their religious beliefs, but they certainly should be among the first and loudest to express outrage and to have the courage to stand up against the Islamic radicals. They should seek out and capture/reveal radicals at every opportunity. The Middle East is dealt with the greatest care and respect – we’re terrified of offending or otherwise making these people angry. We’re fearful of striking back during their significant religious events; we’re concerned about offending someone by using racial profiling (though the last time I checked the average terrorist is a Moslem Arab male from 18 to 40 years old). We’re concerned about them, but their concern for us is nothing short of non-existent.
I really thought that peace in the Middle East (Israel) might be possible with the recent Roadmap to Peace. Both sides were making REAL progress and it looked like peace might actually be possible. Then those good-old-radical Moslems who want nothing but the complete annihilation of everything not them, proceeded to attack Israel to the point that it simply had to defend itself. This sequence of events demonstrated to me that peace will never be possible so long as radical Moslems are tolerated. Moslems around the world have a choice to make. Are they more interested in joining the 21st century, striving for peace and harmony, or supporting the actions of monsters just because they share a common religion? The path they are on is clear, and it only promises death, misery, poverty, hate and ultimately threatens the entire world.
When Moslems around the world yell out in words and actions that they in fact do not support radical Islamists they will be respected by the civilized world, until then, their lack of words and actions paints them as nothing short of a friendly terrorist.
